Earth Forum Report
|
|
Phyllis Faber (EFM Founding Member), Coordinator for Bay, Estuaries and Oceans Day on Tuesday 30th October, has arranged a wonderful boat trip out into the bay for the class.
There is space for more intrepid sailors and Phyllis extends the invitation to all past and present board members to join her.
Email Kim Suave (Class 34), Assistant Training Director, to sign-up for this trip: ksuave76@gmail.com
Kim reports that the Earth Forum program, now going into its 8th week, is receiving enthusiastic feedback from students; like this comment after Agriculture/Mariculture Day
You do such an incredible job-I never saw a better job of keeping to a schedule, and I can't believe how much we are receiving for our tiny fee. Such generosity on the presenters' part and all who work to organize and make this happen. Thank you!

Lake Davis and the Northern Pike
|
|
In our Marin Environmental Film Festival in April 2005 we screened the film "How to Kill a Fish" that describes the attempts to eliminate the invasive pike in Lake Davis. Nets, electric probes, even explosives were unsuccessfully used, and then, in 1997, the water was treated with powdered rotenone.
It didn't work. Within a couple of years the pike were back.
With the potential to cause irreversible damage to the Feather, San Joaquin and Sacramento river systems, the aggressive Northen Pike is not responding to attempts to eradicate it from Lake Davis, high up in the Sierra Nevada.
In September the State Department of Fish and Game tried again. This time with a liquid version of rotenone on the lake and a drip system up the tributaries. Will they be successful?

Al Gore scores!
|
|
It was very exciting to watch Al Gore receive the Nobel Peace Prize - he has certainly found his own special way to make a difference in the world.
There was an attempt to ban An Inconvenient Truth from schools in the UK (on the grounds that the film is political indoctrination), but this has been thrown out of court. Schools may show the film as long as they point out there are inaccuracies in the film : "Such claims as that the snows of Kilimanjaro are melting from global warming, or that that polar bears are drowning, searching for ice, are not proved", said the judge, who nevertheless called the documentary "powerful" and "broadly accurate," and cleared it for use in school as long as teachers now explain that it's only a movie!
Al Gore's latest innovation is the creation of a virtual town hall, a forum for online sharing of opinions from Climate Change to Abortion, Gun Control to Gay Rights, all in video.
