"Step It Up 2007" Campaign, April 14th: A Nationwide Day of Action on Global Warming
Bill McKibben, author of "The End Of Nature", has initiated "Step it Up", a Nationwide Day of Action on Global Warming. On April 14th, all across the country, Americans will be gathering at iconic, meaningful places to demand: "Step it up, Congress! Cut Carbon emissions 80 % by the year 2050."
The "Don't Be Fueled" campaign in cooperation with California Audubon and the Environmental Education Council of Marin is organizing an educational, family friendly event at the Audubon Center in Tiburon.
There will be three main speakers, brief contributions by children, a display of fuel-efficient cars, including a plug-in hybrid. Displays of maps will show the melting Arctic and the projected sea level rise around the Bay. We will be staging the rising water level based on those maps.
This event is supported by the EFM and the Sierra Club, Redwood Chapter.
Bring your family, friends, neighbors and associates.
Thank you Eva Karlen (29) for this item

March's First Thursday Event: "Rethinking Plastics"
|
|
March's First Thursday event was entitled "Rethinking Plastics" and turned out a crowd of about 50 people, including Charles McGlashan and Carol Misseldine.
Two EFM 34 projects were presented: one by Kim Sauve on behalf of Christin Anderson, who could not attend; the other by Heather Furmidge. Christin's project engaged United Markets to work on reducing the use of plastic bags. Heather's PowerPoint explored the economics of recycling. Stuart began with a short film reviewing some of the deleterious effects of plastics, then discussed the topic, bringing in personal stories to engage the gathering in perceiving the ubiquity of the problem.
After the presentations, various people in the audience pulled out their substitutes for plastic bags, including light weight cotton and synthetic bags, nylon paint filter bags, and various other light weight reusable alternatives to plastic.
At the end, Stuart invited a visitor, Ashley Schaeffer (the daughter of the founder of Real Goods) to speak about concerns about the commercialization of water, and about the "Think Outside the Bottle" campaign, which seeks to stop the privatization of water rights.
Thanks goes to David Weckler (31) for this update

Watch William McDonough Speak on YouTube
|
|
As you may already know, Environmental Forum of Marin has begun filming or recording presentations from our core training programs. The brainchild of Julie Braly (33), Wendy McPhee (32) and John Nygren (28), recording of some lectures from the training program is being done to memorialize the generous efforts of the guests we have been lucky enough to have come to speak to us.
For Energy Day in this year's Training Program (34), co-coordinator Zem Joaquin (33) was able to enlist as a speaker one of our most admired visionaries, William McDonough (whom we all probably know primarily through Cradle to Cradle, the paradigm-shifting work co-written with Michael Braungart).
Julie Braly was kind enough to tape Bill's remarks that day, with his permission. Here's a brief (4 minute) excerpt -- edited & posted for us on YouTube by Julie. Check it out, and share the link with others!
Thanks goes to Julie Braly for the YouTube posting, and to Nancy McCauley for this ENews item.

MALT Event this Thursday, March 22: Food and Farming on the Urban Edge
|
|
Food & Farming on the Urban Edge: How 75,000 Acres of Open Space, Wilderness & Farmland Became Golden Gate National Recreation Area
WHEN: March 22, 2007
TIME: 7 P.M.
WHERE: Marin Art & Garden Center, 30 Sir Francis Drake Blvd., Ross
COST: FREE. Phone 415-663-1158 to reserve a space.
Part of MALT's series on "Food and Farming on the Urban Edge," the evening will highlight the efforts of activists like author Amy Meyer to establish a national park that stretches from Tomales Bay to beyond the Golden Gate. GGNRA's innovative Superintendent Brian O'Neill will provide insights into the park today and its relationship with the ranches and ranching families within its jurisdiction. One of those ranchers, JoAnn Stewart of Olema, watched her father advocate for the establishment of the park when it was unpopular to do so in the ranching community. She'll describe that time and the continued operation of her family's cattle operation today.
Also on the panel is Charles Higgins of Slide Ranch, an education farm located within GGNRA. He'll discuss the importance of sustainable agriculture to the health of people and the environment.
A local food and wine reception will follow the talk, and Ms. Meyer will be available to autograph her book, New Guardians for the Golden Gate: How America Got a Great National Park, which will be available for purchase.
Admission is free, but please call ahead to reserve a space. Phone 415-663-1158.
